1. Not a Medical Device
EYEUM is an assistive communication tool. It is not a medical device and has not been reviewed or approved by any medical regulatory authority. It is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, monitor, or prevent any disease or medical condition.
2. Do Not Rely on It in Emergencies
The app includes urgent phrases (for example, "Can't breathe" or "Suction"). These are provided for convenience only. Like all software and hardware, EYEUM can fail — due to camera or lighting conditions, low battery, a software error, a device problem, or other causes.
You must never depend on EYEUM as the only way to communicate in an emergency or for life-critical needs. Always maintain a reliable backup method of calling for help and, where appropriate, ensure a caregiver is present.
3. Accuracy and Limitations
Eye-gaze detection depends on lighting, camera position, the user's posture and condition, and how ALS is affecting eye movement over time. Detection may be imperfect, and incorrect selections can occur. The app's speed and reliability vary between people and situations.
4. Not Medical Advice
Nothing in the app or on this website is medical advice, and using EYEUM does not replace consultation with qualified healthcare professionals. Any decisions about care, treatment, or communication needs should be made together with a medical provider.
5. For Caregivers and Organizations
Before relying on EYEUM with a person who has ALS, caregivers and clinicians should test it thoroughly and judge whether it is appropriate for that individual's specific situation, abilities, and environment.
6. "As Is", No Warranty
EYEUM is provided free of charge, "as is" and "as available", as a research project. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we make no warranties of any kind and accept no liability for any loss, injury, or damage arising from the use of, or inability to use, the app. You use it at your own risk.
